A Tidy Onigiri Wrapper for a Special Occasion

The products we used:

Wrapper + Holder

Wrapped onigiri

If you are a regular consumer of onigiri, you probably have wrapped them in plastic wrap a few times. Plastic wrap conveniently doubles as both a wrapper and as a holder to keep your hands from getting messy. The downside to plastic wrap is that it’s a bit of work to wrap and unwrap and needs to be managed while you’re eating. If you’re making a lot of onigiri for a big family or group trip, the problems compound.

Another downside is the simple aesthetic. If you are trying to sell onigiri–for a school event fundraiser or something similar–then normal plastic wrap isn’t going to get you any customers. If you’re making onigiri for a date with that special lady that works the register at the 7/11, you’re not going to impress her with a simple plastic wrap.

Thus, for those situations where you need to make a lot of onigiri or you need a pretty package for your onigiri, then you’ll want to look into a wrapper.

Jumbo Wrappers for Jumbo Onigiri

Simple Onigiri Pack onigiri wrappers Making onigiri

The Simple Onigiri Pack onigiri wrappers are big. They are capable of wrapping onigiri made with the jumbo-sized onigiri rice ball molds from Sumibe. The Sumibe can make rice balls 2.5-3 inches long and 1.5 inches wide, on the larger side for onigiri. 2-3 of those big boys will have you catatonic for the next 30 minutes. If you’re looking to get the best bang for your buck with the simple onigiri pack onigiri wrappers, we recommend the Sumibe.

How to Wrap Onigiri with a Simple Onigiri Pack

Wrapping an onigiri Wrapped onigiri

Wrapping with the simple onigiri pack wrappers is easy. Just open the wrapper, slip the onigiri into the wrapper, and then fold the open end and secure it with one of the included sticker labels. Although the wrappers themselves have some popular onigiri fillings like “tsuna” (tuna) and “shake” (salmon), you can use the stickers to label the onigiri in a more visible and understandable way.

Unwrapping the Wrapper

Now of course, you might be thinking that unwrapping the wrapper must simply be the reverse of the previous process. However, the usual way of eating onigiri is to start at one of the corners, rather than on one of the sides. So to make it easy to eat the onigiri, the simple onigiri packs have an exit on the side opposite the entrance. There is a “open” label on one corner that you can grab to peel the wrapper open with the corner ready to eat.

The Simple Onigiri Pack wrappers are convenient, but they have one weakness: if you wrap them in nori, then the nori will get soggy. If you need the absolute most beautiful and crisp nori on your onigiri, and you don’t mind a little extra work wrapping and unwrapping, then you should look into the wrappers from Seinichi.
