There is even an old superstition that rabbits are making mochi (rice cake) on the moon. That is because craters on the moon look like a rabbit and mortar. For this reason, there are lots of creations such as literature, art, skit and music in which rabbits are describing as residents of the moon.
Japanese Events Related to Rabbits
A representative Rabbit event is “Otsukimi” (Moon watching). In Otsukimi, we enjoy watching the moon with susuki grass as substitute for ears of rice and as amulet, and place dumplings. This custom is to drive away evil or disasters and to pray for abundance. Although it’s different from Easter which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, rabbits are adored as a symbol of abundance in either custom.
