  • This is a Tokoname ware mortar. Made of ceramics, it can grind ingredients without giving damage. Thanks to glaze coating, it is easy to wash and always clean.

Use & Care

  • Before first use, wash inside and outside of the mortar and dry it thoroughly.
  • After each use, wash it by moving hand along the lines inside. Using a Japanese Tawashi (scourer) is advised.
  • After washing, dry it thoroughly. Cover it with a plastic bag, etc. to prevent dirt. Store it in a place out of direct sunlight.

Background

In Tokoname, Japan's pottery capital, Yamase SURIBACHIYA L.P. crafts iconic Suribachi mortars. A century-old legacy from the early 1900s, this family business discovered its true calling after the War by dedicating itself solely to perfecting the Suribachi mortars. Through generations of artisanal expertise, their mortars have become indispensable tools in Japanese kitchens.
